XMID / 19-Jun Iran has published a new Notam that extends its active conflict zone to areas of the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman that fall within Iranian airspace (OIIX Notam 1933/25 refers). This is especially relevant to traffic currently operating to/from Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE who may be in close proximity to the affected area. While the OIIX/Tehran FIR remains closed, spill over risks in adjacent FIRs are likely present.
XMID / 18-Jun GPS spoofing has been detected throughout the region due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. New additions include both the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman with traffic operating to/from both Doha and Dubai affected. This is typically being presented as a position shift to show the aircraft over or near Bidkhun, Iran. The UAE AIP contains contingency procedures for GPS interference (GEN 1.5.5) which includes advising ATC and requesting a revised clearance using alternate means of navigation.
XMID / 17-Jun Iran and Israel have exchanged fire for a fifth consecutive day, with explosions reported over Tehran and Iran launching two waves of missiles toward Israel overnight. Air raid alerts were triggered, though the attacks were less intense than previous nights. Airspace risk remains unchanged - Iran, Israel, and Iraq remain closed, with very limited exceptions. High risk also continues in adjacent airspace, particularly over Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria, where missiles and drones are transiting regularly. There has been no reduction in risk to civil aircraft. The airspace of Iran, Iraq and Israel remains closed with very few exceptions. Lebanon and Jordan have reopened, with the latter requiring 30 mins of extra fuel for inbound aircraft. Beware though that both the FAA and EASA strongly advise against overflights of any of the above countries. XMID / 13-Jun Tonight, Iran has launched a series of missiles at Israel. Two waves of missiles reached Tel Aviv at around 1900Z, with some damage and casualties. To the north, the Beirut FIR (Lebanon) has been closed. Earlier, EASA issued a Conflict Zone Information Bulletin on the Middle East situation, advising operators not to operate within the affected airspace (specifically Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Israel, and Lebanon) at all flight levels. LLZZ / Israel 13-Jun As Israel awaits a potential return offensive from Iran, it's apparent that this situation is very different to earlier Israel-Iran exchanges of fire. Israeli airlines have moved their entire fleet out of the country. Earlier today, El Al completed repatriation of aircraft to European airports including Milan, Rome, Sofia, and Larnaca. The airline has cancelled all flights. Arkia, another Israeli carrier, moved their aircraft to Cyprus this morning. LLBG/Ben Gurion is currently almost empty of aircraft. A number of the remaining airlines to operate to Tel Aviv have suspended flights to Israel until well into the second half of this year. It is clear that the expectation of an attack on Israel by Iran, and associated risk to the airspace of Iran, Iraq, and Jordan, is being treated as very likely.

The key message is that the US assesses that, "there is likely a critical risk to aircraft operating at any altitude in the airspace between Israel and Iran from offensive weaponry, the subsequent air defense responses, and the resulting debris. Potential retaliatory attacks against Israel and regional U.S. assets will expand the conflict and will likely pose a risk to aircraft operations in other parts of the Middle East and Africa". XMID / 13-Jun A key element in the current Middle East airspace situation is the strong likelihood that this will continue for several weeks - Israel has stated their operation will continue for this length of time. Currently the FIR's for Israel, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, and Iran are all closed, with a few exceptions. Any airspace that lies between Israel and Iran is at risk, either directly from counter-missile activity or indirectly through misidentification. There are two routes to avoid it all - North (Caspian Sea) or South (Egypt-Saudi corridor). Egypt and Saudi Arabia have issued routing Notams to handle the traffic flow. In Europe, traffic using Greek and Cypriot airspace (Athens/Nicosia FIR's) is likely to get a slot outbound, as demand is high. Many sectors are at risk of overload, so keep a close eye on TCAS, have onward frequencies ready, and expect GPS interference - even more than usual. XMID / 13-Jun 06:00z update: Iraq and Jordan have now closed their airspace. The ORBB/Baghdad FIR is now shut until 09:00z (ORBB Notam A0373/25), and the OJAC/Amman FIR until 08:45z (OJAC Notam A0265/25). They join Iran and Israel as per our previous alert. It’s also being reported that Syrian airspace is closed, but this has not been confirmed by Notam. Traffic is now diverting either south via Egypt and Saudi Arabia, or north via Turkey, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan.
XMID / 13-Jun At approx 00:11z Israel began carrying out major airstrikes on targets in and around Tehran. All Iranian airspace (the OIIX/Tehran FIR) has been closed until at least 10:00z June 13. In expectation of retaliatory attacks, a state of emergency has been declared in Israel. Israeli airspace (the LLLL/Tel Aviv FIR) has also been closed to all traffic apart from north/westbound departures until 07:00z June 14. Previous escalations have shown that in the likely event of a response from Iran, the airspace of Iraq and Jordan may also close at short notice. The situation is still emerging - operators should use a high degree of caution in the region at this time.
XMID / 12-Jun The US Government has ordered all non-essential staff to leave its embassies in Iraq, and is also authorizing the departure of non-essential staff and family members from Bahrain and Kuwait. The move follows reports that Israel may be preparing a strike against Iran, raising concerns of regional escalation. Iran has warned it would retaliate against US bases in the region if attacked. Stalled nuclear negotiations between Iran and the US have further heightened tensions. Operators should remain alert to changes — last year’s Iranian missile strikes prompted the sudden closure of several Middle Eastern FIRs.
EFZZ / Finland 11-Jun An airspace incursion by a Russian military aircraft was reported on June 10 over the Gulf of Finland - the second in as many weeks. The aircraft briefly entered the EFIN/Helsinki FIR east of Helsinki itself before returning to Russian airspace. The Finnish Government is taking this seriously and are actively investigating the bust. Take care near the boundary with the ULLL/Sankt-Peterburg FIR - NATO has previously warned that military aircraft may be operating without transponders or reference to ATC.
KZZZ / USA 08-Jun The FAA has issued an advisory (attached) about possible coverage gaps for domestic CPDLC below 16,000’ MSL. This can lead to messages failing or not being received by ATC - especially outside of major metropolitan areas. There are no immediate plans to improve existing ground-based infrastructure which means the issue is here to stay. While less critical for jet traffic, be aware that CPDLC services may be unreliable at lower levels in remote areas.
OLZZ / Lebanon 06-Jun Israel carried out airstrikes on targets in Southern Beirut on June 5. Smoke was visible near OLBA/Beirut airport, but no impact to ops was reported. Several states maintain active airspace warnings for the OLBB/Beirut FIR due to potential risk from anti-aircraft fire and military activity. See safeairspace.net for a full briefing.
SBJH / 05-Jun An Opsgroup member reports that a crew were forced to the side of the road and robbed while in transit between the airport and a downtown hotel on June 2. The thieves stole their jewellery and electronic devices. The US Dept. of State warns that armed robbery can occur in urban areas at all times of the day, and that foreigners can be a target. Ensure your driver sticks to major thoroughfares (such as the SP-19 state highway) and avoids shortcuts on quieter streets.
OMAD / Abu Dhabi United Arab Emirates 04-Jun An Opsgroup member reports two instances of GPS interference (possible spoofing) from an unknown source on June 3 and 4. The first encounter resulted in a 20nm GPS position shift through 3000’ on departure from Runway 31. The second occurred during intercept of the Runway 31 localizer where RNAV capability was lost. Aircraft type was a Gulfstream. GPS interference is frequent in Middle Eastern airspace, but less common in the UAE. Please let us know if you encounter it, report@ops.group.
UUZZ / Russia 04-Jun Drone attacks across Russia are ramping up, with some reaching as far as Siberia, and that’s increasing the risk for any aircraft still using Russian airspace. Hundreds of drones have been shot down recently, including in areas around Moscow. Russian air defense systems are using surface-to-air missiles capable of reaching all altitudes, so the risk applies at every level. While most operators avoid Russian airspace completely, those still flying there for overflights or trips to Russian cities should be prepared for sudden closures or reroutes. Most of this activity happens at night, but daytime disruptions are now common too.
HSPN / Port Sudan Sudan 04-Jun There was a drone attack targeting critical infrastructure including the airport on May 31. Anti-aircraft fire was reported to the north and west of the city. Sudan has remained in a state of civil war since a military coup in 2023. While its airspace remains closed at all levels, a contingency plan does allow for ops in and out of the airport. It’s not clear yet if there was any damage. Several states maintain active airspace warnings for Sudan - see safeairspace.net for a full briefing.
OYSN / Sanaa Yemen 28-May The airport was badly damaged by an Israeli airstrike on May 28 - at least one unattended commercial jet was destroyed. There’s been no official announcement, but the airport is reportedly non-operational until further notice. There have been no commercial flights here since previous airstrikes in Dec 2024. Yemen remains an active conflict zone, and the vast majority of Yemeni airspace (OYSC/Sanaa FIR) should be avoided. See safeairspace.net for more info.
SPJC / Lima Peru 28-May A Copa B738 operating into Lima on May 23 was cleared for the 16R approach, but lined up with the closed-for-WIP Runway 16L instead. The error was only picked up by the TWR controller at 500ft. At the time a KLM B777 was crossing 16L. The reason for the mistake is not yet known, but may indicate that others could fall foul of the same trap.

It covers the operational status of LLBG/Tel Aviv, risk perspectives involving Yemen, Gaza and Iran, and a general overview of the Israeli approach to mitigating risk. The risk in Israel is persistently higher than the Israeli CAA perspective of it.
SAZZ / Argentina 27-May Argentina’s Notam system is still down today - no word yet on when it will be restored. In the meantime, the best source of info would be your handler and the airport authorities. Existing Notams in other country’s systems (FAA, etc.) may not be current, while new ones will not display. Also keep an eye on SUP A48/25 which lists a large number of instrument approaches that are unavailable due to lapsed revalidations - this may go unnoticed by foreign operators.
SAZZ / Argentina 27-May Member Report: The Notam system in Argentina is down “for maintenance,” and after more than 12 hours, there still appears to be no target time for it to come back online. If you are heading there soon, speak with your handler early and check if they can source local Notams for you. Keep in mind that Notams in other country systems (FAA, etc.) might be old or no longer current, and new ones will not display.
OPZZ / Pakistan 25-May Both Pakistan and India have extended their reciprocal airspace ban on each other’s aircraft. A fragile ceasefire agreement remains in place but we continue to advise caution - especially over the Kashmir region and along the shared border where air defense activity could resume with little warning if hostilities re-start. France has amended its airspace warning for the region - it now recommends operators not to enter a section of cross-border airspace in Northern Pakistan/India below FL260 (LFFF Notam F0779/25 refers).
ZZZZ / Worldwide 25-May The mystery of worldwide dual GPS failures appears to have been solved. Over the weekend Boeing, Honeywell, and Collins collaborated to investigate the cause, and the outcome is that the faults were traced to one GPS satellite (PRN 37). A change in the data format being broadcast from it apparently led to the receiver failures. These were limited to Honeywell MMR's, predominantely on B737 and A320 series aircraft. This change has been corrected, and no further issues are expected. There was no connection to an increase in solar activity, or jamming/spoofing. The three OEM's involved consider the case closed. ZZZZ / Worldwide 25-May This past week, a slew of Dual/Complete GPS Failures began to be reported by airlines and AOs around the world. Typically, the fault is first annunciated as an “ADS-B RPTG” Fault, followed by GPS 1/2 failure. This is unrelated to spoofing or jamming. Many aircraft have been grounded as a result, mostly for short duration pending a reset. An OPSGROUP All-Call is active, requesting further reports and information from members. SVZZ / Venezuela 23-May Panama and Venezuela have agreed to resume commercial flights between the two countries, ending a suspension that lasted nearly a year following a political dispute. This comes shortly after Venezuela announced on May 21 that it is suspending all flights to and from Colombian airports until further notice - although we are still waiting for a Notam to be issued by the SVZM/Maiquetia FIR. The flight suspension appears to be a response to recent political arrests in the region. There is no indication that overflights (that haven’t landed in Colombia) are affected.
UUZZ / Russia 22-May Moscow area airports were heavily disrupted by a sustained Ukrainian drone attack on May 22. At least twenty-three were intercepted by air defence systems near or over the city. Flights were suspended at all major airports. EASA continues to advise operators not to enter the airspace of Western Russia (west of longitude 60 Degrees East) at all levels due to risk of misidentification and anti-aircraft fire. HCMM / Mogadishu Somalia 21-May Another mortar attack was reported near the airport on May 20. The field itself is located near UN offices and several foreign embassies - the Somali Government has previously warned that groups such as Al-Shabaab actively target the area - including aviation interests. This is an important consideration for overflights using the Class A airspace above in the event of an unplanned landing. Safeairspace.net has more info.
EINN / Shannon Ireland 19-May Two recent security incidents at the airport to be aware of: On May 17, some protestors entered the airside area and threw paint on an Omni Air International Boeing 767 parked at Stand 42. This caused a full suspension of operations for around 30 mins, placing three inbound flights in a hold. Fire cover was reduced as airport police and fire crews responded. And on May 1, some protestors were arrested after crashing a van through a security fence in a separate breach. While the airport was previously targeted during protests in Nov 2024, these are the first incidents in some time where demonstrators have physically entered the airside area.
LLZZ / Israel 18-May At least one Houthi missile was intercepted over Israel on May 18 - the target was believed to be LLBG/Tel Aviv itself. The airport has been targeted multiple times in recent weeks. While sporadic, these types of attacks pose an ongoing threat to operations there. ORZZ / Iraq 16-May France has issued a new Notam which supersedes their existing airspace warning (AIC 15/24) for the ORBB/Baghdad FIR. This is due to the renaming of several route segments in a recent AIP update - there has been no change to the actual advice. The new Notam now reads that French operators overflying the ORBB/Baghdad FIR should only be on airways M860 or L602/L718 northbound or M688 southbound, at or above FL320.
HLZZ / Libya 15-May The UK FCO reports that violence in Tripoli has largely subsided following a ceasefire agreed on May 14. However, the situation remains volatile. The Libyan CAA has issued a Notam indicating that operations at HLLM/Tripoli Mitiga Airport are expected to resume later today. Earlier this week, several aircraft were repositioned to HLMS/Misrata as a precaution. We’ve also received a local report confirming that Tripoli controllers have returned to the ACC.Despite signs of improvement, we continue to advise avoiding Libyan airspace (HLLL/Tripoli FIR) entirely. HLZZ / Libya 13-May Heavy gunfire and explosions were reported in Tripoli on May 12. An emergency lockdown is in place. This appears to be in response to the death of a high-profile militant. The situation is unpredictable - as a result the airport authority at HLLM/Tripoli has confirmed evacuation plans have been activated including the transfer of aircraft to HLMS/Misrata. The US Embassy there has issued a new alert reminding US citizens not to travel there. OPZZ / Pakistan 12-May A ceasefire between India and Pakistan, announced on May 10, appears to be holding despite mutual accusations of violations. We continue to advise caution, particularly over the Kashmir region and along the shared border where air defense activity could resume with little warning if hostilities were to restart. Flight tracking indicates that nearly all operators are still avoiding the area, opting instead to reroute south via the Gulf of Oman and the UAE. While Pakistan has reopened all previously closed airways, both countries continue to prohibit each other's aircraft from entering their respective airspace.
UUZZ / Russia 12-May A section of airspace in Southern Russia has been closed at all levels from 0600 - 1600z on May 13 (URRV Notam N6076/25 refers). There is credible concern that this may be associated with the launch of ballistic missiles from a facility located near the town of Kasputin Yar. A similar ban was in place in November ahead of a missile strike against Ukraine. This follows a warning issued by the US Embassy on May 9 predicting a significant airstrike in the coming days. Several states (including the US and Canada) maintain active airspace warnings for Russian airspace, especially near the Ukrainian border - see safeairspace.net for more info.
KZZZ / USA 11-May The FBI is reporting a ‘dramatic increase’ in laser strikes over Washington State. Over four hundred incidents have been reported in recent months, including near KSEA/Seattle and KGEG/Spokane. It’s sufficiently concerning that the agency is now offering a hefty reward for info leading to the arrest of those responsible. The FAA’s current advice to pilots is to report any incidents to ATC without delay, and submit an online report when practical.
XEUR / 08-May The Soviet-era spacecraft Kosmos 482 launched in 1972 sadly never made it to Venus. It’s headed back to Earth some time around May 10, although there’s still a lot of uncertainty about exactly when and where it will enter the atmosphere. Somewhere in the Atlantic off the coast of North Africa looks most likely, but its trajectory could bring it closer to Europe as well, and operators are being warned about possible debris. We should know more on May 9, and Eurocontrol will publish any relevant Notams on the NOP if required.
OPZZ / Pakistan 08-May France has published a new airspace warning for Pakistan and India following this week’s flare-up in hostilities. French operators are recommended not to enter a section of cross-border airspace in the northern Kashmir region where the conflict has been taking place. France is the first country to issue an airspace warning for this region following this week’s events.
OPZZ / Pakistan 07-May No new cross-border attacks have been reported since last night’s airstrikes in northern Pakistan. In India, VIAR/Amritsar, VISR/Srinagar and VICG/Chandigarh airports remain closed to civil flights until May 10 as a precaution. In Pakistan, flights have now resumed at all airports that were temporarily closed last night, including OPLA/Lahore and OPIS/Islamabad. Despite some media claims, Pakistan has not closed its entire airspace. Instead, several airways in the northern OPLR/Lahore FIR remain unavailable, although alternate routings are still possible. These restrictions are listed in Pakistan CAA Notams, many of which are not mirrored on the FAA’s site, so it’s best to check the source directly for the latest updates. However, all the major airlines are now avoiding Pakistan’s airspace altogether, with east-west traffic diverting south via the Gulf of Oman and UAE. Given the uncertainty and potential for rapid escalation, this seems a sensible choice. If the conflict continues, there is a chance that Pakistan could impose a full airspace closure, as they did from Feb to Aug 2019 under similar circumstances.
OPZZ / Pakistan 07-May Deteriorating situation tonight between India and Pakistan. India launched airstrikes on several sites in Pakistan, and Pakistan’s military has said it has shot down five Indian aircraft and captured some soldiers.

News media is reporting that Pakistan has closed its airspace for 48 hours (no announcement from India yet). There’s no such clear-cut announcement on the Pakistan Notams (the OPKR/Karachi and OPLR/Lahor FIR codes). They did issue a flurry of Notams tonight, some of which have been cancelled already, but several remain in place advising of closed airways - mostly in the north of the country near to where the cross-border fighting took place.

Either way, all the major airlines are now avoiding Pakistan’s airspace entirely, and pretty much all east-west traffic is now routing via the Gulf of Oman and the UAE instead.

Tonight’s events come after two weeks of deteriorating diplomatic relations between the two countries following a terrorist attack against civilians in India-administered Kashmir on April 22 by a militant group from Pakistan. If the current conflict escalates, one concern is that Pakistan might implement wider airspace closures to overflights similar to what they did in Feb 2019 under similar circumstances.

OYZZ / Yemen 06-May There was an Israeli airstrike on OYSN/Sanaa airport on May 6, in response to a missile attack on LLBG/Tel Aviv on May 4. There’s been no official announcement, but damage to the airport looks to be severe. There have been no commercial flights taking place here since previous Israeli airstrikes back in Dec 2024, which caused extensive damage to the control tower and terminal buildings. Yemen remains an active conflict zone, and the vast majority of Yemeni airspace (OYSC/Sanaa FIR) should be avoided.
LLBG / Tel Aviv Israel 05-May A ballistic missile fired by the Houthis hit near LLBG/Tel Aviv yesterday, close to Terminal 3. Flights were briefly suspended, some international airlines canceled operations, but the airport reopened about an hour later and things are mostly back to normal. There were no fatalities, though several people were treated for minor injuries. The Houthis claimed responsibility and warned airlines to avoid the area. This was their fourth missile aimed at Israel in 48 hours, though the others were intercepted. The Israeli government has promised a response, and the situation in the region remains tense, so it’s a good idea to monitor updates if you have upcoming operations in or out of LLBG/Tel Aviv.
MMSD / San Jose Del Cabo Mexico 29-Apr Member report: After clearing customs and immigration at MMSD, a crew member was called into the AFAC office despite all paperwork being completed. Officials requested they transport a bag containing prescription medication back to the US. The crew member immediately refused. The situation appeared staged, possibly as an integrity test or trap. Crews should be aware that accepting unknown items could lead to serious consequences, including criminal charges or aircraft seizure. Always politely decline, request written confirmation and avoid handling anything you have not personally verified.
VIZZ / India 24-Apr There was a major terrorist attack against civilians in Kashmir on April 22. A militant group from Pakistan has claimed responsibility. The diplomatic response to this incident may escalate known risks to civil aircraft operating over this disputed region. Several airspace warnings exist for Kashmir at all levels due to potential threats from military activity. See safeairspace.net for a full briefing.
TTPP / Port of Spain Trinidad and Tobago 21-Apr There was a fatal shooting outside the arrivals area on April 17, which resulted in a mass panic. The culprits have not been caught. Temporary security protocols are in place including the presence of armed security officers and road blocks. The government is calling for more permanent measures to be introduced. The US Dept. of State continues to advise against travel to Trinidad and Tobago due to risk of crime - be mindful of crew security if stopping here.
SKRH / Rio Hacha Colombia 14-Apr There was an armed robbery on April 10. Several men breached the perimeter and opened fire on a security truck transporting cash to a waiting jet in close proximity to passengers and the aircraft. They managed to escape but at least two have now been arrested. The airport was closed for two hours. The US Dept. of State continues to advise against travel to Colombia due to a risk of violent crime - consider the safety of your crew and aircraft for all stops here.

MTZZ / Haiti 04-Apr A helicopter was hit by small arms fire on April 2, just north of Port-au-Prince. The security situation here remains poor due to ongoing gang activity. Several states (including the US and Canada) have airspace warnings in place either prohibiting or advising strongly against flight below 10,000’ due to risk of gunfire. OLZZ / Lebanon 02-Apr The UK has upgraded its airspace warning for the OLBB/Beirut FIR. It now recommends that operators do not enter at any level due to ongoing military activity. EASA also extended its existing warning with similar advice on March 31. This follows renewed Israeli airstrikes on targets in Beirut this week.
RCZZ / Taiwan 01-Apr China is carrying out a new wave of joint military drills in the waters surrounding Taiwan. This appears to be a response to recent political events. Large numbers of aircraft have reportedly been operating inside Taiwan’s Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) over the past 24 hours - there have been no reports of incursions in domestic airspace. Increased military activity can put civil aircraft at extra risk - it’s a timely reminder to review the ADIZ procedures for Taiwanese airspace (attached).
OLZZ / Lebanon 01-Apr EASA has extended its Conflict Zone Information Bulletin (CZIB) for Lebanon with no change to the advice: operators should avoid entering Lebanese airspace at all levels unless operating to OLBA/Beirut airport. Even then, they suggest only approaching and departing over the sea along with a thorough risk assessment beforehand. This follows renewed Israeli airstrikes on targets in Beirut on March 28.
HXZZ / South Sudan 30-Mar There was a high-profile political arrest on March 27. This has caused concerns that the country may be about to re-enter a state of civil war. There are reports of heavy military presence in the capital, Juba. The US Embassy has issued a new warning advising citizens to leave. Several states maintain airspace warnings for South Sudan below FL260 due to risk of anti-aircraft fire - the outbreak of war could quickly escalate these risks.
HCMM / Mogadishu Somalia 20-Mar There was a mortar attack on a guarded compound at the airport on March 19 - near where UN personnel board their aircraft. Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility. This aligns with a recent state-issued warning that militant groups may actively target aviation interests here. SBGR / Sao Paulo Brazil 13-Mar Member Report: Large balloons above Sao Paulo are pretty common, especially around this time of year. There’s a group of artists in the area who create and launch them, some are several meters wide. The launches, which aren’t legal, seem to happen mainly on Sundays during Lent, and balloons have been spotted as high as FL150. Crews have even had to take evasive action at times, but SBGR ATC seems indifferent to PIREPs since they can’t really track or control the balloons. Despite the obvious risk, there are no Notams or ATIS warnings about them. There’s even been one report of an engine ingestion.
MTZZ / Haiti 12-Mar France has extended its airspace warning for Haiti - operators should remain above FL100 at all times in the MTEG/Port-au-Prince FIR, and not operate into MTPP/Port-au-Prince itself (LFFF Notam F0337/25 refers). Several other states (including the US, UK and Canada) maintain similar warnings. Gang activity continues to present significant risk to low level aircraft from gunfire.
RKZZ / South Korea 10-Mar The US and South Korea are carrying out their annual joint military exercise Freedom Shield from March 10-21. North Korea perceives this as a threat, and historically responds with unannounced missile tests - the latest reported on March 10 with several landing in the sea of Japan. GPS interference is also likely - the RKRR/Incheon FIR has a long standing warning for this, which can affect ops at Seoul airports RKSS and RKSI and extend into the Yellow Sea. SBGR / Sao Paulo Brazil 10-Mar New report from an OPSGROUP member - three large balloons were spotted during their arrival on March 9 at approx 1000z. The first was the over the SANPA fix, and the second abeam GR202 both below crossing traffic. A third was sighted above the final approach path to Runway 10R. Several aircraft reported the hazard to ATC, but no official warning has been issued.
HXZZ / South Sudan 09-Mar A UN helicopter came under fire on March 7 during an evacuation in Upper Nile State - a northeastern region near the Sudanese border. There were a number of casualties. Several states advise against flight below FL260 over South Sudan due to risk of anti-aircraft fire. See safeairspace.net for more info.
KZZZ / USA 09-Mar The big Space X launch on March 6 ended with an explosion - falling debris was spotted in both Florida and the Caribbean. The FAA briefly halted flights at KMIA/Miami, KPBI/Palm Beach, KMCO/Orlando and KFLL/Fort Lauderdale. Debris response areas were also activated as far east as the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos. The previous launch in January also failed under similar circumstances. There will be an FAA investigation before any further attempts are allowed.
YMAV / Avalon Australia 06-Mar There was a serious security breach on March 6 - a person dressed as a maintenance worker in a hi-viz vest climbed through a hole in a perimeter fence and attempted to board a commercial flight with a large firearm. Several crew and passengers managed to restrain him. The airport went into an active lock-down. The Federal Police and airport authority are investigating how this could happen, and what changes need to be made to security protocols at the field.
HCMM / Mogadishu Somalia 28-Feb There was a mortar attack near the airport on Feb 28. This seemed to coincide with a visit by an important political VIP. The airport has an extensive history of similar incidents - the Somali Government previously issued warnings that groups such as Al Shabaab may actively target aviation interests. Aircraft using the Class A above need to be aware of the safety risk of unplanned landings. Safeairspace.net has more.
KZZZ / USA 26-Feb The FAA has expressed some concern about the use of LED approach lighting that can be invisible to some enhanced flight vision systems (EFVS). These rely on infrared, which LEDs do not emit. The FAA advises pilots experiencing a loss of sensor performance to go-around if they do not have the normal visual references to continue. The FAA site does contain a list of airports where runway approach lighting systems have been converted to LEDs, which could be useful to avoid if using EFVS.
YZZZ / Australia 23-Feb No further live firing exercises by Chinese naval vessels on the Tasman Sea have been reported since Feb 22. This caused significant alarm as almost no notice was provided to aircraft transiting busy international airways above. Warnings were only issued by voice on 121.5. The ships are being closely monitored, and were last reported 280nm east of Tasmania. Their intended track isn’t clear.
VYZZ / Myanmar 23-Feb France has issued a new airspace warning for Myanmar (the VYYF/Yangon FIR). It advises operators to remain at or above FL260, and that only VYYY/Yangon airport can be filed as an alternate (LFBB Notam F0250/25 refers). The UK and Germany maintain similar warnings due to risks posed by military activity and anti-aircraft fire. YZZZ / Australia 21-Feb ATC issued a hazard alert today for live firing exercises by Chinese military vessels in the Tasman Sea, approx 350nm southeast of Sydney near position MIKEG. The warning applied as high as FL500 and was in close proximity to several airways between Australia and New Zealand. This event was unusual for the region, and several aircraft requested deviations to avoid the area. It’s not clear whether more exercises are planned.
LUZZ / Moldova 18-Feb At least two weaponised drones infringed the LUUU/Chisinau FIR on Feb 16. This occurred during a large-scale drone strike by Russia against targets in Western Ukraine. Moldovan airspace has a history of spill-over risks from this conflict. Several states maintain airspace warnings for Moldova, including a complete flight ban by Canada due to risk of anti-aircraft fire and military operations. Safeairspace.net has more info.
LLZZ / Israel 17-Feb There are valid concerns that the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in Gaza may fail. In that case, the most likely scenario is a return to active fighting. EASA recently downgraded its airspace advisory for the LLLL/Tel Aviv FIR. However we recommend that overflights continue to use caution as the situation may change at short notice. KTEB / Teterboro USA 13-Feb There was a security incident last month - a man armed with a pistol easily gained access to the ramp and boarded a parked aircraft where he assaulted a pilot and flight attendant. He later trespassed an FBO before being arrested. The Port Authority has taken this seriously, and is working with the airport FBOs to improve ramp access security procedures.
