LUZZ / Moldova 18-Feb At least two weaponised drones infringed the LUUU/Chisinau FIR on Feb 16. This occurred during a large-scale drone strike by Russia against targets in Western Ukraine. Moldovan airspace has a history of spill-over risks from this conflict. Several states maintain airspace warnings for Moldova, including a complete flight ban by Canada due to risk of anti-aircraft fire and military operations. Safeairspace.net has more info.
LLZZ / Israel 17-Feb There are valid concerns that the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in Gaza may fail. In that case, the most likely scenario is a return to active fighting. EASA recently downgraded its airspace advisory for the LLLL/Tel Aviv FIR. However we recommend that overflights continue to use caution as the situation may change at short notice. KTEB / Teterboro USA 13-Feb There was a security incident last month - a man armed with a pistol easily gained access to the ramp and boarded a parked aircraft where he assaulted a pilot and flight attendant. He later trespassed an FBO before being arrested. The Port Authority has taken this seriously, and is working with the airport FBOs to improve ramp access security procedures.
VHHH / Hong Kong Hong Kong 10-Feb There’s an updated AIC out for bird hazards at the airport. The upcoming Spring period (March - June) is one of the worst times as a large species will be migrating. ATC will issue a warning to aircraft wherever possible and they’re asking for PIREPs if birds are seen near the runway or approach path. There’s also a form to fill out if you have a confirmed or suspected strike.
FZZZ / Democratic Republic of the Congo 10-Feb The CAA has extended its Notams for FZNA/Goma which will remain closed until at least May 7 due to active fighting. It continues to advise aircraft not to enter the airport TMA at any level due to a risk of anti-aircraft fire. This follows a new alert issued by Canada on Jan 31 warning operators not to overfly the FZZA/Kinshasa FIR below FL260 for the same reason. See safeairspace.net for a full briefing.
FZZZ / Democratic Republic of the Congo 06-Feb A crew reports GPS interference (possible spoofing) on Feb 5 in Eastern DRC. The event occurred westbound on airway UM216 near position OVPAP - 5nm southeast of Goma, and continued for approx 200nm. Fighting in the area has rapidly escalated in recent weeks - including an ongoing rebel offensive in Goma itself. Any loss of navigation should be taken seriously at the moment due to a high risk of misidentification. Both the UK and Canada advise against overflights below FL250 and FL260 respectively due to potential for anti-aircraft fire. Safeairspace.net has more.
MMNL / Nuevo Laredo Mexico 04-Feb The airport was temporarily closed on Feb 3 due to a nearby shootout. The arrest of a high-profile criminal figure triggered armed confrontations across the city. The situation seems to have stabilised. The US Dept of State maintains a Do Not Travel warning for Tamaulipas State (including Nuevo Laredo) due to criminal activity and risk of kidnapping.
XMID / 03-Feb EASA has published a little context (attached) on its decision to remove Conflict Zone Information Bulletins (CZIBs) for both Israel and Iran. Essentially this is in response to cease-fire agreements that are now in place. However they note that several risks still exist - individual states maintain their own warnings for those, so be wary when considering any overflights. Safeairspace.net has more info.
FZZZ / Democratic Republic of the Congo 03-Feb Canada has issued a new airspace warning for the DRC, advising against flights below FL260 due to the potential risk from anti-aircraft weaponry. This follows an airspace warning issued by the UK back in Nov 2024 which says pretty much the same thing. There’s an ongoing rebel offensive in eastern DRC along the border with Rwanda which has worsened recently - FZNA/Goma airport has been captured, and flights in the region should be avoided.
OIZZ / Iran 03-Feb EASA has withdrawn its conflict zone information bulletin (CZIB) for Iranian airspace. It previously recommended operators not to enter the OIIX/Tehran FIR at any level. The reason for the change isn’t clear - several other states maintain active airspace warnings, including a complete ban on US operators due to risk of misidentification and unannounced military activity. XAFI / 03-Feb Scam alert! An OPSGROUP member reports receiving a fake ASECNA invoice for thousands of euros recently. A few indicators - it was received by email (not regular post), the email address used was acoountpayable.asecna@gmail.com, it purportedly came from ‘HQ’ in Qatar, and the phone number in the email signature had been subtly changed. If you encounter more of these, let us know!
FAZZ / South Africa 31-Jan The South African Weather Service has issued an update regarding the region's Weather Reporting services. Aviation TAFs & METARs are only available on social media (X) and email (check with your handler). The cyber attack has compromised their services, and there is no ETA when regular distribution will resume.
FZZZ / Democratic Republic of the Congo 30-Jan The US Embassy has issued a new ‘Do Not Travel’ warning for the DRC. The UK FCO has also begun advising against all but essential travel to the capital, Kinshasa. Local carriers have begun cancelling flights there. There have been violent protests targeting foreign interests in the past few days due to the ongoing rebel offensive in Eastern DRC. Explosions and gunfire have been reported in the capital. Crew security is a major concern at this time - layovers should be avoided.
FAZZ / South Africa 28-Jan There was a cyber attack on the South African Weather Service (SAWS), which caused its servers to crash. No METAR / TAFs are available through the normal channels for all South African airports (including ACARS). SAWS advises that aviation weather forecasting is available through alternate means - you will need to ask your local handler to contact SAWS and provide the latest forecasts.
VIZZ / India 27-Jan New OPSGROUP member report - GPS jamming encountered in the northwestern portion of the VABF/Mumbai FIR on Jan 24 at 2000z. Total loss of GPS signal on airway L639 approaching GUREV westbound at FL340. The event lasted for at least 30 minutes. Signal eventually recovered on one receiver, the other was U/S for the rest of the flight. Aircraft type was a B777-300.

FZZZ / Democratic Republic of the Congo 23-Jan Fighting is intensifying in North Kivu province (Eastern DRC). A rebel group has announced they intend to take control of Goma and are only a short distance away. The UK FCO is warning any foreigners there to leave. Of all the countries who regularly publish airspace warnings, only the UK has issued one for DROC so far - they say operators should not enter the Kinshasa FIR between Congo DRC and Rwanda near FZNA/Goma below 25,000 AGL due to a risk of anti aircraft fire.
EYVI / Vilnius Lithuania 20-Jan A Boeing 737 reportedly diverted on Jan 16 due to GPS interference during the approach. The extent of the problem isn’t clear, but the Lithuanian CAA are investigating the event. ILS/DME approaches are available at both ends but take care on the published SID/STARs which require GNSS.
LLZZ / Israel 19-Jan A ceasefire is now in effect with Hamas in Gaza. Another with Hezbollah in Lebanon has held since November. The risk of active fighting to civil aircraft in the LLLL/Tel Aviv FIR has reduced. We’ve updated our safeairspace.net warning for Israel to ‘Level 2 - Danger Exists.’ The long-term outcome of these agreements is still unpredictable, and so we continue to advise carrying out a risk assessment if considering an overflight.
KZZZ / USA 16-Jan DJI, the main recreational drone producer in the US, has removed its built-in geo-fencing feature that protects airports from incursions. Instead, an FAA database will simply warn the user when close to a no-fly zone. The issue is that this can now be maliciously ignored. DJI has said that its geo-fencing is about education, not enforcement. Continue to report any illegal sightings to the FAA.
XMID / 15-Jan A ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel will come into effect on Jan 19. It’s good news for airspace safety in the region - especially the LLLL/Tel Aviv FIR. While the signs are positive, it’s early days and so we continue to advise caution for overflights of Israeli airspace for the time being. EASA currently advises operators to conduct a risk assessment before entering.
KZZZ / USA 12-Jan There have been a number of drone incidents reported over LA County in the past few days, including a firefighting aircraft that was damaged by a collision near the Pacific Palisades. Be aware of the risk of operating at lower levels near active TFRs or fire-affected areas. The FAA has not reported any conflicts at major airports.
UUZZ / Russia 12-Jan Several airports in Western Russia were impacted by Ukrainian drone strikes over the weekend. Air defence systems shot down at least three. This follows a new airspace warning issued by EASA last week advising operators not to enter Russian airspace at all levels (west of 60 Deg East) due to a high-risk of misidentification. OSDI / Damascus Syria 05-Jan The Syrian CAA has announced that the airport will re-open on January 7. It has been closed since the overthrow of the government last month. At least one major Middle Eastern carrier plans to resume flights there. OLBA / Beirut Lebanon 03-Jan Protestors have reportedly set up road blocks near the airport. A security operation is underway involving the seizure of a foreign aircraft allegedly transporting a shipment of cash destined for political purposes. Airport security and other agencies are involved. Access to and from the terminal is restricted at this time.
OEAO / Al Ula Saudi Arabia 02-Jan An OPSGROUP member reports an incorrect tower frequency has been published on the Jeppesen chart - the correct one is 118.0 (not 118.775). It is active during daylight hours - be sure to contact it at least ten minutes prior to arrival.
TTZZ / Trinidad and Tobago 01-Jan A state of emergency is in effect due to gang-related violence, especially in the capital Port of Spain. The US Embassy is warning to expect heavy police and military presence and to co-operate with authorities if questioned or searched. It’s also advisable to carry ID at all times while on layover. Be wary of crew safety if leaving accommodation - especially at night.
UUZZ / Russia 01-Jan An Embraer passenger jet was likely struck by an air defense system while on approach to URMG/Grozny (Southern Russia) on Dec 25. It later diverted and crash landed in Kazakhstan after sustaining heavy damage. This event occurred during Ukrainian drone strikes in the area, and strongly suggests a case of mis-identification. The majority of western operators remain subject to a reciprocal entry ban from Russian airspace. For those still using it, several airspace warnings exist for the URRV/Rostov FIR where the incident occurred. This is due to significant spill-over risks to civil aviation from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. An investigation into the incident is underway.
VYZZ / Myanmar 22-Dec An OPSGROUP member reports further GPS interference (likely spoofing) in the north of the VYYF/Yangon FIR on Dec 20. The event occurred approx. 100nm east of APAGO on the B465 airway at FL430. Map shift observed on auxiliary ipad before aircraft GPS systems failed. This was followed by the activation of a GPWS Pull Up warning for a full five minutes. All systems returned to normal by APAGO. We’ve had a number of similar reports from this region in recent months. Look out for Myanmar overflights between China and Bangladesh.
XMID / 22-Dec A US military jet was shot down over the Red Sea in a friendly fire incident on December 22. It was apparently a case of mistaken identity by a naval ship being used to target multiple Houthi drones in the area. This follows a missile intercept incident observed at close proximity by a transiting aircraft near Jeddah on November 3. The Red Sea has been an active conflict zone for the past 12 months, and these events highlight ongoing risks to civil aviation through this busy corridor. KZZZ / USA 19-Dec The FAA has said that pilot reports of laser strikes have risen dramatically in the past few weeks possibly due to the nuisance drone sightings on the East Coast. There were four times the average number on Dec 17 alone - New Jersey was a hot spot. For more info on how to report this hazard, see the FAA’s Advisory Circular attached.
VYZZ / Myanmar 19-Dec We’ve had another report of GPS jamming (possibly spoofing) in the north of the VYYF/Yangon FIR. During cruise at FL370, 40nm after position LINSO on A599 the crew experienced a GPWS "PULL UP, PULL UP" warning. Warning disappeared after about 30 seconds. Also GPS signal was lost in that position. We’ve had a few similar reports from this region in recent months. Watch out for Myanmar overflights between China and Bangladesh airspace.
PAZZ / North Pacific 18-Dec Member report on a couple of airports in the Aleutians: PADK/Adak and PACD/Cold Bay. Both airports do not have functioning ILS until some time late January. RNAV approaches are still good (though Adak’s RNAV minimums are similar to a visual approach or about 1,000’ AGL). Also, Adak had a power issue over a month ago and since then everything electrical with the airport has been unreliable or U/S including the ILS, pilot controlled lighting, lead-in lighting, navaids.
KZZZ / USA 17-Dec Nuisance drones continue to be sighted over New York and New Jersey. The FAA has reported that KSWF/Stewart was closed for an hour on Dec 13 after several infringed its airspace. It’s still not clear who is responsible, and an active FBI investigation continues. So far, impact to civil air traffic has been minimal. The FAA requires approval for any drone to be operated in controlled airspace, or above 400’ AGL in Class G. If you spot one breaking these rules, report it to ATC and via the attached website.
EPZZ / Poland 16-Dec Russia carried out a large-scale missile and drone attack on targets in Ukraine on Dec 13. This caused some alarm, and air defence systems were put on high alert near Poland’s southeastern border. Military jets were also scrambled to the area, and there are conflicting reports of possible airspace infringements. Spill-over risks from the conflict continue to be present in Polish airspace where there are no active warnings - we continue to advise caution if operating near its border with the conflict zone in Ukraine.
MDZZ / Dominican Republic 16-Dec Member report to watch out when applying for your eTicket (online arrival/departure form) - be wary of fraudulent websites charging fees of up to $70 USD per traveller. The legitimate website is attached, and the application is free. Anything asking for payment should raise red flags.
KZZZ / USA 13-Dec Lots of large drones have been sighted at night over parts of New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania in recent weeks, some operating near military interests. The FBI is carrying out an investigation but are not reporting any threats to public safety. The FAA has established a small ‘no-fly’ zone for drones near the Solberg (SBJ) VOR but there has been no impact to civil traffic. MTPP / Port-au-prince Haiti 12-Dec The airport has re-opened after several commercial aircraft were fired upon by gang members last month. Violence is still being regularly reported in the capital, and there has been no tangible improvement in the situation to report. Several states retain airspace warnings for Haiti - including a ban on US operators below FL100 over a large portion of the country. See safeairspace.net for more info.
OSZZ / Syria 11-Dec Canada has banned operators from entering the OSTT/Damascus FIR at all levels due to a risk of anti-aircraft fire and military activity (CZQX Notam H5870/24 refers). This supersedes the existing AIC which only advises against it. The security situation there remains unpredictable following this week’s rebel takeover. All Syrian airspace has subsequently been closed until at least Dec 22 in the meantime.
EHAM / Amsterdam Netherlands 10-Dec Eurocontrol are reporting that anti-aviation protestors are expected at the airport on Dec 14 from midday onwards. Some kind of anti-KLM demonstration, by the sounds of it. If it goes anything like the last one in the summer, the protest will be outside the main terminal, and will not impact the bizav terminal.
OSZZ / Syria 09-Dec All Syrian airspace (the OSTT/Damascus FIR) has been closed until further notice following the rebel take-over this week. OSTT Notam A0232/24 has that info. Regardless of the airspace closure, most states have long-standing warnings against flights in the OSTT/Damascus FIR, including an outright ban on US operators.

Rebel forces have taken control of the capital Damascus after a major offensive in recent days - the President has reportedly fled the country. What happens next isn’t clear - but there is no tangible improvement in airspace risk to report yet. EDZZ / Germany 08-Dec Climate activists have planned a number of protests across Germany that will last until Dec 12 - especially in Berlin. Airports have not been mentioned as a specific target, but two groups (Extinction Rebellion and Last Generation) are involved with a recent history of jumping fences and interfering with unattended biz jets. Be mindful of aircraft security during this period.
OSZZ / Syria 05-Dec There has been a significant escalation in fighting in the past week - rebels have reportedly taken control of two major cities in Northern Syria, Aleppo and Hama. OSAP/Aleppo is currently closed. Air defence activity has been especially active targeting weaponised drones. Syria is in a sustained state of civil war, and its airspace should be considered extremely dangerous at all levels. MDLR / La Romana Dominican Republic 04-Dec An OPSGROUP member reports a particularly bad laser strike while on a 10nm final to Runway 11 recently. The aircraft was hit by green lasers from two separate ground locations in the city to the right of the extended centreline. This caused significant distraction to the crew during the approach.
RKZZ / South Korea 04-Dec There was panic over the past 24hrs after the president declared a state of martial law. Tanks and military personnel were reported in Seoul. The order has since been revoked but the security situation remains volatile. These events seem to be in response to recent political opposition and increased tensions with North Korea. No violence was reported but civil unrest may continue. We suggest crew remain close to the airport for the time being and monitor embassy alerts closely.
MTPP / Port-au-prince Haiti 03-Dec The airport’s closure has been extended again until Dec 11, but this should be considered rolling. MTPP Notam A0050/24 refers. There’s been no tangible improvement to report since multiple aircraft were fired upon at low level recently. The FAA recently re-issued its airspace warning for US operators in Haitian airspace which prohibits flight below 10,000 AGL over a large portion of the country due to risks from gang activity. XMID / 01-Dec EASA has extended its Conflict Zone Information Bulletins (CZIBs) for Israel, Iran and Lebanon until the end of January with no change to the advice: operators should continue to avoid the OLBB/Beirut and OIIX/Tehran FIRs at all levels and use special care in the LLLL/Tel Aviv FIR. This is consistent with our previous guidance - the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah is a positive sign but the situation remains volatile. XMID / 26-Nov A ceasefire agreement has been signed between Hezbollah and Israel. It went info effect on Nov 27. It is positive news for airspace risk in both the LLLL/Tel Aviv and OLBB/Beirut FIRs. However, for the time being we suggest operators maintain the same degree of caution until the situation becomes clearer. SafeAirspace.net maintains Do Not Fly warnings for both countries which will continue to be reviewed.
MTPP / Port-au-prince Haiti 26-Nov The airport will remain closed to all civilian aircraft until at least Dec 3, probably longer. MTTP Notam A0045/24 refers. This is due to risks from ongoing gang activity. Several states have issued new warnings for Haitian airspace including the FAA, which now bans US operators below FL100 across a large portion of the country, including Port-au-Prince itself. LLZZ / Israel 24-Nov Hezbollah carried out a large missile and drone attack on targets near Tel Aviv on Nov 24. At least two hundred projectiles crossed the border from Lebanon, with most intercepted by air defence systems. This followed airstrikes in Beirut the day prior. No aviation disruptions were reported, but most foreign airlines are actively avoiding the LLLL/Tel Aviv FIR due to extensive risks posed by the ongoing fighting. See safeairspace.net for more info.

The North Terminal is still operating normally, and arriving flights are still able to land at the airport at the moment. Signature have reported that the FBO is currently not accepting any flights. HXZZ / South Sudan 21-Nov Heavy gunfire next to HSSI/Juba was reported on Nov 21. Apparently it was due to a political arrest nearby - UN staff were temporarily ordered to shelter in place. The US Dept of State maintains a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning for South Sudan partly due to risk of armed conflict, and air navigation services remain suspended above FL245 following a military coup in neighbouring Sudan in April 2023.
MTZZ / Haiti 21-Nov The US FAA has amended its airspace warning for Haiti. US operators are now prohibited from flying below 10,000ft MSL in two areas: A big area over around MTPP/Port-au-Prince, and a small circle to the north within 10nm of specific lat/long point. The FAA has confirmed that MTCH/Cap Haitien is not in the prohibited area.
RKZZ / South Korea 19-Nov GPS spoofing was again observed near Seoul, along the North/South Korean border and into the Yellow Sea from Nov 8 - 17. It appears to be part of an extended GPS interference effort by North Korea. Notam RKRR Z1239/24 has been issued to warn of the danger.
FZZZ / Democratic Republic of the Congo 18-Nov The UK has extended its airspace warning for the FZZA/Kinshasa FIR. Operators should not enter the airspace along the border between Congo DRC and Rwanda near FZNA/Goma airport below 25,000’ AGL due to risk from anti-aircraft weaponry. EGTT Notam V0046/24 refers. Active fighting in the region has continued for some time.
KDAL / Dallas Love USA 17-Nov A Boeing 737 was struck by a bullet during taxi on the evening of Nov 15. It sustained some damage below the flight deck and returned to the bay. Runway 13R/31L was briefly closed due to the incident. Police have not released any further info, and normal ops have resumed.
MTZZ / Haiti 15-Nov Canada, France and the UK have published new airspace warnings for Haiti, recommending that operators should not enter the airspace below FL100. This follows the US FAA ban for US operators, announced earlier this week. As we reported previously - all flights at MTPP/Port-au-Prince have been suspended entirely following reports of aircraft being hit by gunfire on approach.
ZGSD / Zhuhai China 15-Nov If you are heading to ZGSD/Zhuhai for the airshow this week, expect loads of extra security after an attack left dozens of people dead and injured in a car ramming attack in a crowded public area. The government and police have vowed to increase security in the wake of this. You should allow yourself extra time at the airport and other public places. You can expect the same heightened security in other cities in China too.
VTZZ / Thailand 14-Nov The annual lantern festival is taking place this weekend. Although celebrated everywhere in Thailand, the folks up north really get into it. If you’re planning a flight to VTCC/Chiang Mai or VTCT/Chiang Rai on the nights of Nov 15 or 16, you might want to plan to go during daylight hours instead. Each year at VTCC/Chiang Mai, hundreds of lanterns regularly drop into the airport compound, and this year, several flights have already been rescheduled or cancelled during this period.
OPKC / Karachi Pakistan 13-Nov New security measures have been introduced at the airport. Barricades and checkpoints have been set up, and authorities are checking boarding passes/crew IDs. Private taxis can also no longer access the terminal. Heavy traffic delays are being reported. This follows a bombing near the airport on Oct 6. The US Dept of State maintains a long-standing warning in Pakistan for terrorist attacks against targets that include airports.

MTZZ / Haiti 12-Nov On Nov 11, two aircraft were hit by gunfire on approach to MTPP/Port-au-Prince. The first, a Spirit A320 enroute from KFLL, was hit on short final to Runway 28 at around 1100 local. Damage was significant, with multiple rounds entering the fuselage, avionics bay, engine, and cabin. The second aircraft, a Jet Blue A320, discovered a bullet hole on return to KJFK. Operations at MTPP have been suspended entirely until Nov 18, but with this level of risk to aircraft, Haiti will be off-limits for some time to come. UUZZ / Russia 12-Nov Ukraine carried out a major drone strike against Russian targets on Nov 10, the largest since the start of the war. Flights were simultaneously disrupted at all three Moscow area airports - UUDD/Domodedovo, UUEE/Sheremetyevo and UUWW/Vnukovo. OEZZ / Saudi Arabia 11-Nov The Red Sea has been an active Conflict Zone for the past 12 months. A missile intercept incident near Jeddah on Nov 3 (observed at close proximity by transiting air crew) has highlighted the risk to civil aviation, and has made it clear that this area is an extension of the Israeli conflict. RKZZ / South Korea 10-Nov GPS Spoofing has again been observed near Seoul, along the North/South Korean border, and in the eastern Yellow Sea. On Nov 7, a dozen or so aircraft were subject to spoofing. Notam RKRR Z1218/24 has been issued to warn of the danger.
