OIZZ / Iran 12-Jan Iran is experiencing its most significant civil unrest in years due to political protests. Authorities have imposed a nationwide internet and communications blackout, meaning almost no connectivity. Fatalities have been reported in several cities, including Tehran. A number of major Middle Eastern carriers are cancelling flights there. In response to international concerns, the US Government has warned the situation may deteriorate and is not ruling out some form of military intervention. This in addition to any retaliatory response by Iran could elevate risks in the OIIX/Tehran FIR at short notice. Ops in the region should keep a close eye on the situation.
TVSC / Canouan Island Saint Vincent and the Grenadines 08-Jan OPSGROUP members have reported serious runway surface issues at TVSC. Expect potholes, loose gravel and debris across RWY 13, with a real risk of tyre cuts and FOD. Left side is marginally better - centre and right are worst. Even idle reverse has been throwing rocks into wings and landing gear - avoid reversers if possible. Patching is ongoing but conditions keep degrading. Handlers say the government is considering a full runway closure in 2026 for replacement. Fuel is available but the meter is reportedly unserviceable. Staff are helpful, but if you have a choice, crews recommend using TVSA/Argyle instead.
LGZZ / Greece 08-Jan An investigation into the source of VHF radio interference that shut down Greek airspace on Jan 4 is ongoing. Thus far there has been no evidence that it was intentional or malicious. The most likely culprit was a technical issue with ATC radio equipment itself - only controller transmissions were blocked. The likelihood of a recurrence is low, but an official root cause is still to be announced.
RCZZ / Taiwan 07-Jan A member has reported GPS jamming during arrival and approach into RCSS/Songshan, with other aircraft also experiencing similar issues. Ongoing Chinese military exercises in the waters west of Taiwan are the likely cause, and GPS interference may become more frequent in the area. Both RCSS/Songshan and RCTP/Taipei Taoyuan offer ILS approaches.
SVZZ / Venezuela 06-Jan Like the US, Canada has downgraded its airspace warning for the SVZM/Maiquetia FIR from a prohibition to a caution. For Canadian operators, it’s now advised to remain at or above FL200 at all times; and a risk assessment should also be carried out before operating within 100nm of Venezuelan airspace while overflying the TJZS/San Juan, SKEC/Barranquilla, SKED/Bogota, SBAZ/Amazonica, SYGC/Georgetown, TTZP/Piarco or TNCF/Curacao FIRs due to military activity. LGZZ / Greece 04-Jan On Jan 4, Greece experienced a nationwide disruption of ATC communications after massive radio interference affected most frequencies across the LGGG/Athens FIR. Authorities suspended all arrivals and departures for several hours as a precaution. The Greek CAA described the interference as unprecedented and possibly originating from the air, but it remains unidentified. It’s not clear yet whether the event was accidental or intentional. Ops are now back to normal.
SVZZ / Venezuela 04-Jan The FAA has lifted the temporary ban on US operators in SVZM/Maiquetia, TJZS/San Juan, TNCF/Curacao, and the TTZP/Piarco FIR west of 57W, and has reverted to earlier guidance advising caution at all altitudes due to ongoing military activity. EASA, along with several European states, have also issued airspace warnings for the region. Elevated risk remains, particularly from military aircraft operating close to civil traffic, the potential for misidentification, and reduced ATC and traffic visibility. SVZZ / Venezuela 03-Jan The FAA has temporarily prohibited US operators from flying at all altitudes in Venezuela’s SVZM/Maiquetia FIR, as well as in the TJZS/San Juan and TNCF/Curacao FIRs, plus the TTZP/Piarco FIR west of 57W - which in practice covers the entire eastern Caribbean island chain. The restrictions are currently valid until at least 0500z on Jan 4, with extensions or adjustments likely as the situation develops. Multiple KICZ Notams cite safety-of-flight risks from ongoing military activity in and around Venezuela. This follows US airstrikes on Jan 3, a major security operation that resulted in the arrest of Venezuela’s president, the declaration of a nationwide state of emergency, and explosions and intense military activity in Caracas. The new airspace warnings point to elevated military activity, heightened air-defence alert levels, and an increased risk of misidentification in and around the affected FIRs. Beyond the US, EASA, France, and Germany have issued airspace warnings advising operators to avoid Venezuelan airspace, and to exercise caution or avoid parts of the surrounding Caribbean airspace due to spillover risk. Earlier airspace warnings for the region flagged GPS interference, unpredictable military traffic at all levels, and reduced ATC visibility - issues operators have been encountering in the region over the past few months. Several international airlines have been avoiding Venezuelan airspace since late 2025, following airspace warnings issued in November. Since the new restrictions took effect on Jan 3, cancellations and rerouting across the eastern Caribbean have increased. Airports remain open, but many N-reg aircraft cannot legally depart under the new FAA restrictions and are being held on the ground, pushing some Caribbean FBO ramps close to capacity. EPZZ / Poland 02-Jan EPRZ/Rzeszow and EPLB/Lublin in southeast Poland were temporarily closed on 27 Dec due to “military aircraft in the area.” The closures appear precautionary and linked to Russian airstrikes in Ukraine. These are typically the first airports affected when Poland activates air defence measures. If you’re heading into the area, plan extra fuel and expect some possible disruption - these airports can close with little warning.
KDCA / Washington USA 19-Dec The US Govt has accepted partial responsibility for the Potomac mid-air collision on Jan 29. This comes as part of ongoing legal action and points to wider issues in very busy, complex airspace. This doesn’t change day-to-day procedures by itself but reinforces that the airport must remain a high-attention environment, especially with mixed military, helicopter and airline traffic. RPLL / Manila Philippines 18-Dec There have been two serious runway incursions at RPLL/Manila in the past month involving aircraft taxiing from Terminal 3 via Taxiway D. In both cases, crews were instructed to turn onto Taxiway C but mistook the junction and entered active Runway 06 instead. The confusion appears to occur at the intersection of Runway 13/31, Taxiway D, and Taxiway C, where surface signage and markings are poorly defined. Crews should exercise extra caution - if correctly lined up on Taxiway C, your heading should be approximately 240° when taxiing toward Runway 06. Take your time and confirm routing carefully. There is no Surface Movement Radar in Manila.
OLZZ / Lebanon 16-Dec The UK has downgraded its airspace warning for Lebanon. Previously, UK operators were advised to avoid all of the OLBB/Beirut FIR at all levels due to potential risks from military activity. That advice still stands, but there is now an exception for OLBA/Beirut arrivals and departures provided the routing stays entirely over the Mediterranean Sea. This brings it in line with current EASA guidance. Israeli airstrikes continue to be reported in southern Lebanon, mainly near the Israel border, meaning the airspace risk remains active despite the Beirut overwater exception.
TNZZ / Netherlands Antilles 15-Dec An A320 operating from TNCC/Curacao to KJFK/New York reported a loss of separation with a military tanker on Dec 12. The crew advised ATC the tanker crossed their flight path at less than 5nm at the same level, while not squawking. Its position was estimated about 150nm north of the Curacao VOR, tracking toward Venezuelan airspace. The following day, another loss of separation was reported involving a bizjet and a military tanker in the same area, again requiring urgent ATC intervention. The TNCF/Curacao FIR has a Notam advising extreme caution when operating to or from TNCA/Aruba, TNCC/Curacao and TNCB/Bonaire due to frequent unidentified aircraft in the terminal airspace. OYZZ / Yemen 10-Dec Yemen had a surprise airspace hiccup on Dec 8 when the coalition running the OYSC/Sanaa FIR briefly stopped issuing overflight and landing permits. It was tied to ongoing political tension in the south and paused several flights in and out of OYAA/Aden until clearances restarted. This was not a formal FIR closure and traffic has picked up again, but Yemen remains, for the rest of the world, a do-not-fly conflict zone with most of the OYSC FIR off limits.
LGZZ / Greece 09-Dec Ongoing farmer protests across Greece are disrupting transport nationwide. LGIR/Heraklion and LGSA/Chania on Crete were hit on Monday Dec 8. At LGIR, farmers entered the runway and the airport closed for several hours. At LGSA they blocked the main entrance and restricted access. Both reopened today but delays continue with heavy police presence. Farmers say they will escalate nationwide, and local media report plans to block the access roads to LGTS/Thessaloniki at some point this week.
EGLL / London Heathrow United Kingdom 09-Dec There was a violent robbery in the Terminal 3 carpark on Dec 7. A group of four men used pepper spray during the theft of a suitcase, and injured over twenty people. The crime is being treated as isolated, and not an act of terrorism. Normal precautions for crew security still apply including heightened awareness of petty crime in crowded areas such as airports.
KZZZ / USA 09-Dec The US Federal Communications Commission has issued a notice of intent to auction off another chunk of spectrum close to frequencies used by radio altimeters. Based on widespread frequency interference during previous expansions, they’re treading more carefully this time and are looking for feedback from the aviation community (including operators). All stakeholders have the opportunity to comment on the proposal until Feb 3 - you can find those details via the attached link.
LTFJ / Istanbul Turkey 08-Dec Yesterday Dec 7 an AJet B737 arriving from BKPR/Pristina slid off runway 06R at LTFJ/Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen during a wet landing. The airport stopped using the runway for a short time while the aircraft was removed and the surface checked. LTFJ is now fully operating again and the only things still showing in the Notams are that low visibility ops on 06R are unavailable and there are ongoing taxiway and apron works that can slow things down on the ground.
EYVI / Vilnius Lithuania 01-Dec The airport closed again last night after more balloons approached from the direction of Belarus. This is the latest in a run of short-notice shutdowns since October. Authorities now say these incursions are no longer viewed as petty smuggling but as deliberate hybrid attacks aimed at unsettling airspace and disrupting civil aviation. The pattern has intensified recently and similar incidents have been reported across Europe, with officials warning the activity is consistent with hybrid tactics linked to Russia and Belarus. Further short-notice closures at Vilnius are likely, so plan solid contingencies and be ready to divert. Sunset to sunrise remains the higher-risk window, but daytime incursions are also possible.
GGZZ / Guinea Bissau 26-Nov A military coup took place yesterday on Nov 26. Soldiers announced on live television that they have assumed full control of the country and have closed the border. The president has reportedly been detained and heavy gunfire has been reported in the capital, Bissau. The status of GGOV/Bissau is currently unknown. No new Notams have been issued by the GOOO/Dakar FIR, which controls the airspace above, but the impact of the coup is still emerging and a closure is likely. SVZZ / Venezuela 26-Nov Spain and Portugal have now issued nearly identical warnings for Venezuela. Both states advise operators not to enter the SVZM/Maiquetia FIR until early December. They report increased military activity, air-defence systems active at all levels, and poor coordination between parties in the area. This lines up with the FAA’s assessment and adds two more state-level recommendations to stay clear of the airspace. Check our article for more info.
SVZZ / Venezuela 22-Nov The FAA has issued a new airspace warning for the SVZM/Maiquetia FIR. KICZ A0012/25 advises caution at all levels because of a deteriorating security situation and increased military activity in and around Venezuela. The FAA’s Background Information note reports GPS interference, plus the mobilisation of military assets including advanced surface-to-air systems capable of reaching civil cruising levels. EYVI / Vilnius Lithuania 21-Nov The airport has seen repeated short notice night-time closures in recent weeks due to suspected smuggling balloons drifting in from Belarus. On Nov 20 the airport again paused flights for more than an hour after new balloons appeared on radar. Authorities warn further sudden closures remain possible. Lithuania has also activated prohibited areas along the Belarus border that allow interception of these balloons, and issued a standing Notam for night-time launches up to FL170. For flights to EYVI: treat sunset-sunrise as the elevated risk window for sudden closures.
TJZZ / Puerto Rico 20-Nov The US FAA has issued a new airspace warning for Puerto Rico’s TJZS/San Juan FIR. KICZ Notam A0010/25 advises operators to use extreme caution at all levels because of an increase in state aircraft operations. It doesn’t say who these aircraft are, but the wording points to military flights, especially given the recent buildup in the region. This may affect route availability and raises the risk of aircraft operating without reference to civilian ATC, along with the possibility of misidentification. There has been a recent spike in US military activity around Puerto Rico and the southern Caribbean, and a larger US naval presence in the area. US forces have also carried out strikes on suspected drug-smuggling boats in nearby waters. Venezuela has objected to the buildup and called the increased US presence a threat, adding to the tension in the region.
FZQM / Kolwezi Democratic Republic of the Congo 18-Nov An Embraer ERJ-145 charter crashed on landing at Kolwezi on Nov 17. The aircraft touched down before the displaced threshold on RWY 29, collapsed a main gear and slid off the runway, with the tail section catching fire. Everyone evacuated without injury. The airport currently has a 1,000-metre threshold displacement on RWY 29 for pavement works, leaving only 1,500 metres available per Notam B0233/25. Video shows the aircraft landing long and into the construction zone, which lines up with a possible missed or mis-briefed Notam, though the cause isn’t confirmed.
EGZZ / United Kingdom 18-Nov A Notam has been issued by the EGTT/London FIR for GPS jamming exercises affecting airspace over southwest England and Wales from Nov 17-28. Activity will take place each day between 0800-1600z (EGTT Notam B2502/25 refers). An AIC has been published warning that traffic above FL200 may experience interference and/or spoofing. For IFR en-route and terminal area ops, only radio navigation should be used in the affected airspace during these times.
VIZZ / India 13-Nov Media in India say the DGCA has issued a new rule requiring pilots to report GPS spoofing within 10 minutes of it happening. We can’t find that circular yet - the only one published is a long 2023 advisory about GPS interference that tells pilots to email a report after the flight, not in real time. The renewed attention follows recent spoofing at VIDP/Delhi, and to cut reliance on GPS, new CAT III ILS systems on both ends of runway 10/28 are set to go live from Nov 27, confirmed by Notam. One OPSGROUP crew arriving on Nov 12 said they saw only a minute of jamming when crossing the Pakistan border, with nothing at VIDP itself. Treat the “10-minute” rule as unconfirmed for now, but stay alert for GPS interference in northern India and report any anomalies to ATC.
XNAT / 13-Nov Eurocontrol advise that GPS jamming activity will take place in the Shanwick FIR in a large piece of airspace off the coast of Ireland and Scotland from Nov 17 - 21, and again from Nov 24 - 28. This will occur daily between 10 - 18z. There are two suggested routes to avoid the area: north via ATSIX - 610000N 0200000W or south via RESNO - 550000N 0200000W. If you do choose to enter the affected airspace, expect increased separation standards and less optimal levels. Report to ATC if you encounter any degradations. EGGX Notam G0223/25 has this info.
HCZZ / Somalia 12-Nov Be aware of an ongoing authority dispute in the north of the HCSM/Mogadishu FIR. Both Somalia and the self-declared state of Somaliland have issued conflicting instructions for overflights. Somaliland says all flights need a PPR from its own CAA from Nov 10, while Somalia has reaffirmed through an AIC that it controls the entire FIR and operators should follow its AIP. Expect mixed messages on permit requirements near northern Somalia and the Hargeisa region. The Somali CAA remains the only internationally recognised authority for all Class A airspace above FL245 - be cautious of conflicting or unauthorised clearances. VIDP / Delhi India 11-Nov There was a large explosion at Red Fort, Central Delhi on Nov 10 - a well guarded area frequented by tourists. The incident is being treated as a terrorist attack. Police have invoked an ‘anti-terror’ law which includes enhanced security measures at airports. The impact of this is longer processing times, intensified patrolling, stricter ID checks and additional security screening. Be wary of crew security - the US Dept. of State continues to advise extra caution at areas frequented by tourists, airports and shopping malls.
HSZZ / Sudan 06-Nov There are unconfirmed reports that an Il-76 military transport plane was shot down by a surface-to-air missile near Babanusa, Southern Sudan on Nov 4. An anti-government group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The country’s airspace remains almost completely closed since a military coup in 2023, with the exception of limited contingency routes ops in and out of HSPN/Port Sudan airport in the far east of the country. Several airspace warnings exist due to the risk of anti-aircraft fire. The country remains an active conflict zone, and should be considered dangerous at all levels. Safeairspace.net has more info.
EGZZ / United Kingdom 05-Nov Firework Night will be celebrated across the UK on Nov 5. It is a major annual celebration, and many people participate. A few things to be aware of - check your airport Notams for any major firework displays taking place nearby. Expect low-level fireworks and increased drone activity over urban areas (especially around dusk). Aircraft may also be at increased risk from nuisance laser strikes.
HTZZ / Tanzania 30-Oct Tanzania held national elections on Oct 29. Following protests in Dar es Salaam, authorities declared a citywide curfew from 1800 LT and deployed police and military forces. Internet access is heavily disrupted across the country. The curfew remains in effect today, Oct 30. Expect checkpoints, restricted road access and possible delays reaching HTDA/Dar es Salaam airport. Ground transport may be limited, so confirm arrangements with your local FBO before operating.
GAZZ / Mali 29-Oct The US State Department has issued an updated security alert for Mali, urging all US citizens to depart immediately due to a rapidly deteriorating security situation. The warning stems from widespread fuel shortages, closure of public institutions, and escalating armed conflict near the capital. The situation is highly unstable. GABS/Bamako airport remains open, but all overland routes are considered unsafe due to the risk of terrorist attacks. Crews should exercise extreme caution and avoid layovers in Mali. DRZZ / Niger 27-Oct A US missionary pilot was abducted by a militant group from a secure neighbourhood in Niamey last week. Efforts are underway to locate him and secure his release. In response to this, the US Embassy has issued a new security alert that says American citizens remain at increased risk of kidnapping throughout the country. Diplomatic staff now require armed security and are banned from public places such as restaurants and markets. Crew security is a major concern at this time.
HECA / Cairo Egypt 27-Oct If you use the Renaissance Cairo Mirage City for crew layovers, consider avoiding it for now. Reports say Hamas members freed in the recent exchange stayed there, raising crew security concerns. At least one airline has moved crews to another hotel as a precaution. No direct impact at HECA/Cairo airport, but if overnighting in Cairo check with your hotel and have a backup ready if you need to switch on the day.
OKKK / 24-Oct Heads up for Kuwait. There’s a rough, uneven surface on taxiway E1 at the E1/E9 intersection where Loop 2 sits. Loop 2 is closed, but you still have to cross this spot when moving between the GA ramp and Loop 1 for 15L or 33R. Crews report a heavy jolt at normal taxi speed with no good daytime visual cues. It’s hard on the nose gear if you hit it fast. At night you can see it with lights. Slow to walking pace when crossing that section of E1. There’s no clear Notam warning about the surface condition.
LFPG / Paris CDG France 24-Oct If you're flying into Paris CDG this weekend, be aware of a planned protest at Terminal 2B at 1400LT on Sat Oct 25. Although the group plans to meet at 2B, disruption is likely across the wider Terminal 2 area, especially on access roads and for staff movements. A commercial intelligence source says attendance could reach a few thousand, so build in extra time for getting to the airport and for ground handling once you're there.
SEGU / Guayaquil Ecuador 22-Oct A car bomb exploded at a shopping mall next to the airport on Oct 14. The US Embassy has issued a new security alert for the area, which includes hotels often used for crew accommodation. The attack is part of ongoing violence involving Ecuadorian gangs, which in recent months have increasingly used explosives in turf and drug-route disputes. Be cautious around large crowds and public places.
FMZZ / Madagascar 20-Oct An interim government is now in effect following a military coup on Oct 14, but there’s been no tangible improvement in the security situation to report. Both the FMMM/Antananarivo FIR and FMMI/Antananarivo airport remain open, but the situation is still fluid - continue to plan for unexpected disruptions if operating here, including careful consideration of crew security.
XMID / 17-Oct EASA have extended their vague and inaccessible “Information Notes” for airspace risk in Israel and Iran to the end of January 2026. There are no content changes - both still advise operators to “take potential risk into account in their risk assessment and routing decisions.” The Israel note covers the LLLL/Tel Aviv FIR and airspace within 100 NM of Egypt and Jordan, while the Iran note applies to the entire OIIX/Tehran FIR at all levels. The full text of these notes is not publicly viewable and remains locked to EASA’s internal portal, replacing the former public CZIBs issued after this year’s conflict. XEUR / 16-Oct EASA has published a new SIB recommending that airports keep stop bars on all the time, not just in low-vis conditions. That means more airports in Europe may soon have stop bars illuminated H24, even in good weather, as part of new runway safety efforts. No real procedural change for operators - just expect to maybe see stop bars lit more often and remember: don’t cross a lit stop bar unless ATC has cleared you and it’s switched off.
HKJK / Nairobi Kenya 16-Oct Flights have resumed at the airport after a brief closure earlier today when crowds mourning the death of a prominent opposition leader breached security. The shutdown lasted about two hours while the area was cleared. Expect some delays and extra security around the airport today, and check with your local handler for the latest updates.
FMZZ / Madagascar 14-Oct There was a military coup on Oct 14 following weeks of protests across the island. The military unit responsible has declared control of the country. The president has reportedly fled. A heavy military presence and gunfire was reported in the capital, Antananarivo. No new Notams have been issued for FMMI/Antananarivo yet, but the operational impact of the coup is still emerging. Short notice airport or airspace closures are possible. We advise a high degree of caution for crew security at this time.
LLZZ / Israel 14-Oct A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect on Oct 10, but it’s still early days and things could change quickly. The risk picture for the LLLL/Tel Aviv FIR may be improving, but overflights should continue with the same level of caution for now. SVZZ / Venezuela 07-Oct Venezuela has placed its air defences on high alert after claiming five US F-35s were detected about 75km off the northern coast near Caracas on Oct 2. The military has since moved coastal air defence units, signalling increased vigilance along the SVZM/Maiquetia FIR boundary. There’s no change for overflights - the FAA’s FL260 restriction expired in 2023, and no countries currently have active airspace warnings for Venezuela. FMZZ / Madagascar 06-Oct A week of political protests has led to widespread disruption across Madagascar, with several airlines cancelling flights to FMMI/Antananarivo. The demonstrations have turned violent, with reports of more than 20 fatalities. Both the US and UK State Departments are advising citizens to defer travel. Expect potential airport disruptions and limited security in and around the capital.
XEUR / 03-Oct EDDM/Munich is the latest European airport hit by drone disruption. It closed for a few hours overnight on Oct 2 after multiple drones were spotted in the airspace. This isn’t a one-off - airports in Denmark and Norway have seen similar incursions recently. Authorities will continue to respond proactively to drone threats, which may lead to short-notice airspace restrictions or temporary airport closures.
EKZZ / Denmark 28-Sep All civil drones have been temporarily banned in Danish airspace - several more were spotted near military interests over the weekend. This follows an extended closure of EKCG/Copenhagen last week (Sep 23) due to drone activity. It still isn’t clear who is responsible, but the ban coincides with two important EU political events happening this week from Oct 1 - 2.
EKZZ / Denmark 25-Sep Multiple drones were spotted near airports in Southern Denmark on Sep 25, including EKEB/Esbjerg, EKSB/Sonderborg and EKSP/Vojens. This is being treated as a credible security threat - the police are working with the military to identify the nature of the devices, with reports that the Danish Air Force is currently on standby. This follows similar events earlier this week in Oslo and Copenhagen, but it’s not clear if there is a connection.
MTZZ / Haiti 24-Sep The FAA has extended its existing airspace warning for Haiti through March 2026. There has been no change: US operators remain prohibited from flying below 10,000 ft in certain parts of Haitian airspace, including the area around MTPP/Port-au-Prince, due to ongoing security concerns. XEUR / 23-Sep Both ENGM/Oslo and EKCH/Copenhagen were shut for several hours overnight after multiple large drones were spotted near their airspace - Oslo for about three hours, Copenhagen for nearly four. Around 50 flights were diverted from Copenhagen, with additional diversions and delays at Oslo. Both airports are now open, though delays continue. Investigations are ongoing, and there is no confirmation yet whether the drones were linked to Russia or Ukraine. The incidents came just hours after Ukraine launched a large overnight drone attack on Moscow, in which Russian forces reported shooting down dozens of drones.
XEUR / 21-Sep There was another alleged airspace incursion by Russian military aircraft on Sep 19 - this time in Estonia (the EETT/Tallinn FIR). The event occurred over the Gulf of Finland near the boundary with the ULLL/St Petersburg FIR. There have been a number of similar events in NATO member airspace in recent weeks. In response, NATO is carrying out additional military exercises in Eastern Europe. Spillover risks persist near Ukraine’s borders where air defence activity may occur without warning. OIZZ / Iran 18-Sep Iran carried out unannounced missile tests near Tehran on the evening of Sep 18. A number of glowing objects and smoke trails were observed at unknown altitudes. Previous tests of ballistic missiles have reached well above the flight levels. The FAA (among other states) bans all operators from the OIIX/Tehran FIR due to risk of misidentification and unannounced military activities. See safeairspace.net for more info.
SVZZ / Venezuela 16-Sep IFALPA has issued an updated warning urging operators to suspend crew layovers in Caracas. They note that crews have been targeted and, in some cases, abducted. If a layover must go ahead, they recommend it should only happen with strict security measures in place, including safe transport and plans to extract crews quickly in case of unrest or attacks. Most foreign travel advisories agree that Caracas remains extremely dangerous, with high levels of violent crime, kidnappings, and civil unrest, and conditions can deteriorate without warning.
SBGR / Sao Paulo Brazil 15-Sep An OPSGROUP member reports finding kite strings on the main gear after two recent arrivals. Balloons and kites appear to be an ongoing risk at the airport, and have been spotted as high as FL150. Despite the obvious risk, there are no Notams or ATIS warnings about them. SBGR ATC seems indifferent about PIREPs as the threat is common and difficult to control.
LRZZ / Romania 15-Sep There has been another Russian drone incursion, this time in Romanian airspace (the LRBB/Bucharest FIR). The event occurred on Sep 13 at approx 0330z in southeastern Romania near the Ukrainian border. The drone was intercepted, but not shot down. This marks the second breach of NATO airspace within a week. Spillover risks persist near Ukraine’s borders, where air defence activity may occur without warning.
KOTH / North Bend USA 12-Sep A person has been arrested after trespassing airside and illegally entering several aircraft in a hangar on Sep 3. The airport authority is asking affected owners to thoroughly check their aircraft before flying. The airport’s security plan is on file with the TSA and is reviewed annually; however an internal review into how the breach occurred is now underway.
KZZZ / USA 12-Sep The FAA has issued a new Safety Alert (SAFO) for the risks of carrying lithium batteries in passenger compartments. These devices, including power banks and portable chargers, can self-ignite and cause onboard fires. There is an additional risk when these are stored in hidden or hard-to-access areas. The SAFO encourages proactive risk management, crew training in firefighting (including using water to cool batteries) and briefing passengers on safe storage. VNKT / Kathmandu Nepal 10-Sep The airport has reopened after a 24-hour shutdown caused by violent protests across the city. The closure halted all flights while the army secured the airport and city. Operations are now allowed, but tight security and a city-wide curfew remain in place. Expect delays from extra screening, restricted airfield movements, and possible last-minute changes if unrest flares again. Airlines like IndiGo and Air India canceled flights yesterday, so service will be limited for the next day or two as schedules recover.
EPZZ / Poland 10-Sep Overnight on Sep 9-10, Polish and Nato aircraft shot down several Russian drones infringing the EPWW/Warsaw FIR during strikes against Ukraine. Airspace over EPWA/Warsaw, EPRZ/Rzeszow and EPLB/Lublin was closed temporarily due to ‘unplanned military activity’ but has since reopened. Flight tracking shows overflights avoiding the airspace east of Warsaw towards Belarus. Poland has held emergency security meetings and is coordinating with Nato, but any further response is still TBD. While there are no active warnings in place, Poland has seen several spillover incidents since the Ukraine-Russia war began in 2022, at times leading to temporary airspace restrictions.
ESZZ / Sweden 10-Sep The CAA has reported a significant increase in GPS interference in Swedish airspace over the past year - both over land and water. Poland and the Baltic States are also being affected. This is believed to originate from Russia (likely military jamming) which is often traced to sources such as Kaliningrad or St. Petersburg. The issue is being actively addressed in an upcoming ICAO Assembly at the end of the month. The extent, duration and nature of the interference continues to present a safety risk for all aircraft operating in the region.
XMID / 10-Sep So far the Israeli airstrike in Qatar on Sep 9 has not triggered major disruptions in adjacent FIRs. There are no new airspace restrictions to report, and OTHH/Doha is operating normally. Flight tracking indicates that major airlines are still overflying Qatari airspace. Despite this, continue to monitor the situation closely. The diplomatic response to this event is still unfolding - sudden airspace closures are possible if the situation escalates.
OTZZ / Qatar 09-Sep Israel carried out a precision strike in Doha today targeting senior Hamas leadership, with smoke reported over parts of the city. The exact location isn’t confirmed, but OTHH/Hamad and nearby airports remain open, and flights still appear to be operating normally at the moment. VNKT / Kathmandu Nepal 09-Sep Kathmandu’s airport is closed today, with all domestic and international flights suspended after violent protests escalated overnight. Heavy smoke near the airport is also affecting visibility on the main southern approach. Protestors stormed government buildings, fires broke out across the city, and the Nepali Army has been deployed to provide security across the city and at the airport. No Notam has been published yet, but authorities confirm the shutdown is real and indefinite until the situation stabilizes. Crews should not plan ops into Nepal today.
LLZZ / Israel 08-Sep On Sep 8, a deadly shooting in Jersusalem has triggered heightened security. No direct airport closures have been reported, but road checks could slow transfers to/from LLBG/Tel Aviv. This follows an incident on Sep 7, where LLER/Eilat airport was briefly shut after a Houthi drone struck the arrivals hall. Ops resumed around 2 hours later following IAF/IAA checks. The IDF also reported three other Yemen-launched drones were intercepted over the south.
LBPD / Plovdiv Bulgaria 02-Sep The media is reporting that an aircraft carrying a political VIP was impacted by GPS interference on Aug 31. There is some suspicion that this was a deliberate jamming attempt of Russian origin, but hasn’t been confirmed. The LBSR/Sofia FIR itself has a recent history of interference given its proximity to the Black Sea, a known hotspot. For ops at LBPD, be wary of RNAV-1 or RNP based procedures.
EFZZ / Finland 14-Aug New member report of GPS interference (possible spoofing). The event occurred in the north, after waypoint POGOK enroute to ENTC/Tromso, Norway. One FMS position froze, the other was recovered using IRS and DME. The event lasted approx 45 mins (aircraft type Gulfstream). ATC reported this is normal ops for the region. Expect similar events when operating near the border with Russia. These disruptions are more likely the result of Russian military GPS jamming (often traced to sources such as Kaliningrad and the St Petersburg region) spilling over into adjacent airspace.
XNAT / 13-Aug The latest Vulcan rocket was launched successfully at 00:56z on August 13. Debris hazard warnings affecting the Sal Oceanic, Dakar Oceanic and Santa Maria FIRs have now been lifted with no further impact. The original Notam (LPPO A3678/25) has been cancelled - ops are back to normal.
